Ning Lyu, who graduated from the University of Southern California in May 2023 with a degree in Software Engineering, shares her journey from facing rejections to securing a software engineering position in a biotech company in Los Angeles. Despite not landing an internship in the summer during college, Lyu’s persistence and strategic approach led her to a rewarding career.

What were the biggest challenges you faced as an international student while searching for internship opportunities in the US?

1. Visa Sponsorship

Ning Lyu: One of the toughest challenges was the increased competition from domestic computer science talents, which reduced opportunities for international students. At least half of my applications were rejected due to visa issues. Even when I made it to the first interview, the visa sponsorship requirement often led to rejection.

2. Language Barrier

Ning Lyu: Language was another significant hurdle. Communicating effectively in English during interviews and in professional settings was challenging and required additional effort to ensure clarity and professionalism.

How did you overcome the obstacles and barriers you encountered during your internship search?

1. Visa Sponsorship

Ning Lyu: To tackle the visa sponsorship issue, I used browser extensions to filter out non-sponsoring companies. Initially, I didn’t disclose my visa status and waited until later in the process to see if the company could sponsor me. This strategy helped me focus on potential opportunities without being prematurely disqualified.

2. Mock Interviews

Ning Lyu: Practicing interviews was crucial. I reached out to professionals and joined small community groups, such as Xiaohongshu (a Chinese social media platform), where I found new graduates like myself. Conducting mock interviews three to four times provided valuable feedback and significantly improved my performance.

 What specific strategies or resources did you find most helpful in your pursuit of internship opportunities as an international student?

Ning Lyu: I used LinkedIn and Indeed, specifying locations to target my job search effectively. These platforms allowed me to find opportunities that matched my criteria and preferences.

2. Networking and Visibility

Ning Lyu: Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Posting and engaging on LinkedIn can be incredibly helpful. Sharing my journey and connecting with others in my field opened up new opportunities and provided support.

 What advice or tips would you give to other international students who are currently studying in the US and hoping to secure internship opportunities?

1. Consistent Application Effort

Ning Lyu: One of the most crucial aspects of job hunting is consistency. Aim to apply to at least 30 positions each day, setting a target of reaching up to 1,000 applications a month. It might seem overwhelming, but the reality is that the interview rate could be as low as 1-2%. However, persistence is key. Treat your job search like a full-time job, dedicating a specific amount of time each day to applications and interview preparation.

2. Structured Daily Routine

Ning Lyu: Maintaining a structured routine can significantly enhance your productivity and well-being during your job search. From 10 a.m. to around 2-3 p.m., focus intensively on job applications and technical exercises.

• Morning Focus: Start your day with job-related tasks when your mind is fresh. This period should be dedicated to job applications, practicing coding problems, and improving your technical skills.
• Physical Activity: Incorporate activities like going to the gym into your daily routine. Regular exercise not only keeps you physically healthy but also helps to reduce stress and improve mental clarity.
• Balanced Schedule: Ensure you have a balanced schedule that includes breaks and leisure activities. This balance is crucial to avoid burnout and maintain a positive outlook.

3. Information Gathering

Ning Lyu: Staying informed and connected is essential for navigating the job market effectively. Utilize various platforms to gather information, stay updated on industry trends, and expand your network.

• WeChat, LinkedIn, Indeed, and Xiaohongshu: Use these platforms to keep up with industry news, job postings, and networking opportunities. Follow industry leaders, join relevant groups, and participate in discussions to stay engaged and informed.
• Networking: Building a professional network can open doors to job opportunities and provide valuable insights into the job market. Attend industry events, webinars, and online meetups to connect with professionals in your field.

4. Take Action

Ning Lyu: In the software industry, casting a wide net is essential. Timing is critical; never wait until you feel fully prepared to take action. The perfect moment will never arrive, so start now and keep moving forward.

• Proactive Approach: Begin applying for jobs as soon as possible, even if you don’t feel fully ready. The experience gained from early applications can provide valuable feedback and improve your future efforts.
